The New Gerry Lopez Soft Top, more commonly referred to as a Gerry, is Probably the Best deal I’ve ever seen. You can get one of these at Costco for under $90. When they came out A lot of my friends that I go surfing with got a few of these. It’s also probably the best beginner surfboard you can get.
The Surfboard construction- a picture of a broken Gerry Lopez
The Gerry Is an 8ft foam surfboard. It has a foam core with a waterproof outer layer that is textured to give it some traction so you don’t slip off while you’re surfing. For extra support, there are thick pieces of wood running through the inside of the surfboard, which makes it almost indestructible. on top of that the surfboard is almost 4in thick. I only know of a few people who have broken one including me.
How Does it Surf?
The Gerry is actually not too bad when it comes to performance surfing. If you compare it to a regular fiberglass surfboard it is a lot lighter and thicker which makes it paddle super fast and makes it easy to catch waves. It also has a trackpad so if you practice you can stomp it and do some radical turns.
The differences between a Gerry and a Wavestorm
The Wavestorm was used the same way as the Gerry Before the Gerry was made. it was the beginner surfboard that everyone owned. I used to ride one on small days that were only rideable with a longer board. Some of the key differences are that the Wavestorms are a lot heavier, and the outer material is not as grippy. A lot of people put wax on their Wavestorms. Another thing is that on a Gerry there are FCS 1 fin boxes, so if you want to you can swap the fins out for better ones, or you can ride finless. The Wavestorms have screw-in fins like most other softtops.
If you want me to do another review on a surfboard or something else let me know by commenting, and leaving a like.
